I had the broom going in long strokes before the last waltz had finished, because Dad always said the floor should be clean enough to see your reflection when the lights went down. The Pavilion's parquet was laid in 1931, pale oak cut into eight petals around a brass ring at the centre, and every Saturday the couples swung round that ring the same way, anticlockwise, as if the boards would sulk otherwise.

Mr Hale from the chip shop once asked why we bothered with the gel on the stage lamps, a blue at the rim that thinned to green by the doors. I told him it was so the light looked like the sea at dusk when you stood on the groyne. He said I was soft. I said he could sweep the floor himself then, and he never asked again.

That night the fuse blew halfway through the last waltz and the hall went black, except for the brass studs along the border, which caught the moon through the high windows and ticked round the edges like a clock. I stood in the middle of the ring with the broom against my hip and waited. When the lamps came back, blue at the centre and green at the doors, I was still standing on the brass, so I let the broom fall and walked the length of the floor alone, counting petals under my feet until I reached the doors.
