Dragonfly and vine swirls on a foot
Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo
A dragonfly with pink and red wings sits above a sweeping green vine with curling tendrils, two green leaves and several small blue stars. The linework is thin and mostly uniform, with the colour applied as soft, flat fills. The design runs diagonally across the skin of the foot, with the dragonfly at the upper right and the vine tapering towards the left edge of the frame.

Mind the lid, Tom, it's still spitting. Right, you'll want the rest of this while the onions go golden, because it's the bit about Morwen's dragonfly. She kept a trailing green vine along the rail of her narrowboat, the kind that climbs anything it's allowed to, and every dusk the little blue stars came down out of the reeds to sit in its curls as if they'd been invited. Her dragonfly, Ruddock, had wings the colour of rhubarb and cinder, and he wanted to be a lantern more than anything on the cut.

So he flew the length of the canal asking for a spare star. The lock keeper at Hapsley told him stars were for folk who stayed put, and the heron at the weir laughed so hard he dropped a fish. Ruddock came back worn out and sulking, and sat on the top curl of the vine with his tail hanging down. The vine, being a stubborn old thing, said it would give him a leaf or two if he'd stop buzzing about like a loose cork and hold still for once. He slowed. He curled his tail the way a question does. The vine gave him two leaves, one green for each side of the cabin roof.
That's the trick of it, Tom. A dragonfly that's been given shade stops hunting for light, and the stars came down that night anyway, and sat right where they always sat. Ruddock still lights the cut on still evenings, if you're quiet enough to catch him at the top of the vine. Now stir that pan, the onions are catching.
