Watercolour unicorn head tattoo

Fine line · Colour · Photo

A unicorn head in profile, with a flowing mane and a long spiralled horn, is drawn in thin dark linework. The interior is filled with loose, translucent washes of pink, purple, blue, green and yellow that bleed past the outline and run downwards in drips. The image is a close crop with the design filling most of the frame against a pale skin background.

Dear Tom,

The rain came in off the moor on Tuesday and I found the potting shed wall streaked with colour. You'll remember Mrs Ashdown's tin of old watercolours with the cracked lid? Her grandson had been sitting on the bench painting a horse with a spiral on its head, and he'd left the jam jar of water tipped over. By dinner time the whole lower wall had run. Pink had gone down into the rhubarb, and the blue had found its way to the path, where the snails have been wearing it on their shells all week.

I was cross for about a minute. Then I stood in the drizzle and watched the drips reach the ground. Mr Pell says the kitchen garden was walled so the frost wouldn't get at the peaches, but I'm beginning to think it was walled so nothing in here would ever be quite the colour it ought to be.

The boy came back for his brushes on Thursday and stood at the wall with his mouth open. I told him to leave it. He asked if he could finish the horn, and I said the horn was already there if he looked at the damp patch above the gate. He squinted, and so did I, and there it was: a long grey spiral where the paint had sunk into the old mortar.

So the garden has a unicorn now, and it's bleeding into the beans. I've decided to leave it. Come home in August and see for yourself. Bring the good secateurs.

Love, Nell
