Raised middle finger in a botanical wreath

Traditional · Colour · Flash

A raised middle finger rises from a clenched fist at the centre of the design, set against a coral sunburst of radiating lines. Green leaves, thin stems and small red berries form a wreath around the fist, with a teal ribbon tied at the base. The bold dark outlines and flat fills sit on a cream, textured paper background, and the composition is symmetrical.

The bailiff came up the lane at Lammas with his ledger under one arm, wanting the rent on Ada Greave's cottage in coin. She had paid in wreaths for thirty years, hazel and willow bound with bramble, and she did not intend to stop because a man in a clean collar had learned his sums. She set down her shears, wiped her palms on her apron and looked at him for a long moment.

Coin, he said again, as though saying it louder would make the forest pay. Ada told him the wood had always settled its accounts in its own money, and that she would take him to see it. The children gathered at the gate to watch, because nobody in Hollin had ever walked into the trees with a bailiff before, and nobody had ever come out of them with the same opinion.

The path under the oaks forked three times, and each fork looked the same. Ada went ahead without looking back. When the trees opened on a clearing where the sun lay on the grass like a dropped coin, she closed her hand into a fist and lifted one finger straight at the light. The bailiff opened his mouth to protest, and a wren landed on his ledger, and the brambles came up over his boots and wound gently about his wrists, bearing red berries.

He came out at dusk with a wreath around his hat and the ledger full of green. The children swear the figures had turned to leaves, and that the rent was entered in red berries against the Greave name. Ada hung her shears back on their nail and never once asked him for a receipt.
