The flower on the order sheet is the one Gran drew on the back of every recipe card, round petals with black edges and a dot in the middle for each seed. I coloured it in with the yellow pencils you left behind, and the vine wandered off the edge like it had somewhere better to be. Dot the centre enough times and it starts to look like a clock face that has given up on the hours.

Mrs Pryce came in at quarter to six for her usual split tin and saw the drawing pinned over the proving rack. She asked who'd done it. I said nobody, it was just there. She bought it off the wall for a pound and said Gran had sold her that same pattern on a shortbread tin in 1961. So the flower has been going round this town for longer than either of us has been alive.

Come home at Easter and bring the good pencils. The sun is coming up over the bins now, pale as a petal, and I've propped the back door so you can smell the bread from the lane. Love, Bee.
