Black and grey ram head tattoo with curled horns and fine dotwork shading on a thigh, shown twice side by side.

Ram head tattoo on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A large ram head with curled horns and a fierce, direct stare fills the centre of the design, surrounded by fine hatched and stippled linework. The shading moves from dense black to light grey across the horns and fur, giving the head strong volume. The photograph shows the same leg mirrored in two panels, with a partial second tattoo visible at the bottom edge.

Maud had the gate chained twice before she noticed the ram was already inside the orchard, standing among the Discovery trees as if he had paid for the place. Late August had put a rind of gold on everything. Windfalls lay split in the grass, and the wasps moved from one to the next with the drunk concentration of men at a bar.

"He's not ours," her brother called from the lane, not coming any closer. "Came over the ridge with the Hallows' flock and wouldn't go back."

The ram lifted his head. His horns spiralled either side of his skull, ridged like old rope, and his pale eyes settled on her with a judgement she had only ever seen in the parish council. He did not bleat. He simply waited, and the wasps seemed to keep a respectful distance from his face.

She went in with a bucket and an apple. She had decided he would be easy to move, the way you coax a stubborn dog, so she held the fruit out on her flat palm. He looked at it, then at her, then stamped once, hard, and the whole row of trees shivered and dropped three more apples at her feet.

That was when she understood. Every windfall in the grass was one he had knocked down himself, and he had been feeding the wasps for a week out of spite, or perhaps a grievance older than her farm. She picked up the bruised fruit one by one. When she finally turned, the ram was already walking towards the gate, the lane open, as though he had only been waiting for someone to ask him to leave.
