Blackwork · Ribs · Mixed · Photo

A solid black silhouette of a ram's head with curled horns and a simple face, shown in profile against bare skin. The linework is smooth and the shapes are filled with solid black ink, with small red details at the eyes. The ram sits centrally in the frame, with the torso and a blurred background of a room behind it.

Dear Margery, the prior has at last given up on reason and gone to the sheep-fair at Kendal with a coil of rope over his shoulder, which means the tup must be hidden before Lauds tomorrow. You will remember Black Ned, who broke the gate-bolt in March and took the cellarer's hat clean off his head. His horns have grown into a double curl, thick as a man's wrist, and his face is one dark stroke down the nose with two red sparks set high where the eyes should be. Brother Oswin swears it is the lamp that does that. I think the ram simply remembers being a thing the abbey could put a price on.

We moved him on Tuesday to the old lime kiln under the north wall, Brother Tobiah carrying the hay and singing the Magnificat badly so the cloister would not hear the bleating. Ned went in without a fuss, which should have warned us. This morning the prior went down with his rope and found the kiln empty except for a cloven print pressed in the white dust and a single tuft of fleece caught on the iron grate, the grate still bolted from the inside.

Ned was standing on the orchard wall when the bell went for Prime, horns against the sky, looking down at the prior as though he were the one being counted. Nobody has yet found the words to tell the bishop's man. Brother Oswin has entered the sale in the ledger as a loss, and I have entered it as something else, which I believe is the truer accounting.

Pray for us, and keep the hay dry in your barn. Your loving brother, Anselm.
