Stretching cat on a thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A black outline tattoo of a cat stretched forward with its head low and its tail curled upwards. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design is set against plain skin. The cat sits near the centre-right of the frame, with a magenta top and a hand with dark nail polish visible at the top edge.

The fishwives of Scarrow Quay called me Pinch, which was unfair, since I had only ever taken the one herring and that off a gull. Every morning I started the day the same way: down from the bollard, a long slow stretch with my front legs out on the wet cobbles, back arched, tail lifting behind me like the question mark the harbourmaster never answered.

Mrs Abernethy at the net loft thought the stretch was a sign of bad temper. Her husband thought it was a sign of rain. I knew it meant the boats were out and the harbour was mine until the horn sounded at four. I had a whole kingdom of creosote, rope and gull droppings, and I walked its length each dawn with my head low and my eyes half shut, as if I owned the wind.

The morning the Maud Ellery did not come back, nobody stretched at all. The women stood along the wall with their shawls pulled tight, counting boats against the grey sky. I sat on the bottom step of the lifeboat slip and did not move, because a cat who has seen the sea give things back learns to keep still and wait.

At half past five the Maud came round the breakwater low in the water, her engine coughing, and the whole quay breathed out at once. I rose, stretched long and slow for the first time in a day, my tail curled up high as a bent wire. Mrs Abernethy saw me and laughed for the first time that week. Maybe that was the sign after all. The rain came later, just as her husband said it would.
