Woven heart tattoo on upper back

Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A heart shape filled with interlocking, ribbon-like lines that resemble a woven or lattice pattern. The linework is dark and shaded with grey tones, giving the heart a rounded, three-dimensional look. The tattoo sits centrally on smooth skin, with the edge of the shoulder visible in the frame.

The rope had to be finished before the snow closed the Scarrow road, and my uncle Tomas would not let me near the spinning wheel until I had shown him I could lay the strands tight. Four days I practised on a length of hemp tied to the barn post. He cut each attempt off with his knife and said nothing, which was worse than shouting.

On the fifth night I laid the strands my own way, crossing them over and under in a pattern my grandmother used for the good cords, the ones that went across the gorge and were never replaced. She called it the heart lay. Not for romance, she said, but because the middle of a bridge is where the weight goes, and a weave that holds weight in the middle will hold anything.

Tomas found it at dawn, pinned to the bridge post with a ring of iron. He ran his thumb along the grey strands slowly, the way he checked a horse's legs. Then he took out his knife, and I braced for him to cut it. Instead he tied off the end himself and said, Good, now the rain can come.

It came that afternoon, sideways off the ridge, and the old cable groaned and sang. We stood at the near end and watched the heart-shaped weave stretch dark and taut over the drop, the water running down its lines like ink down a page. Nothing gave. When the cloud lifted, the first mule train was already on the far side, and from our end I could see the pattern plainly, the shape of something that had held.
