Ram skull tattoo on lower abdomen
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close crop of a torso showing a large ram skull tattoo across the lower abdomen, with the horns curving outwards and down. The skull is drawn in black and grey with shaded areas giving it depth. The background is out of focus, and a hand holding a black camera sits at the bottom of the frame beside the tattooed arms.

Mind the wasps, they're drunk on the windfalls this time of year, same as the men at the cider press. Sit where you can see the gate. Now, you'll want to hear about the ram, because everybody in Hollin Dene asks about the ram before they ask after the apples.

He came down off Gorse Fell the week the Pippins came in, when the grass on the slopes had gone to straw and the orchard was the only green thing left for a mile. Old Abel Starling saw him first, stood in the third row with a basket on his hip and his mouth open. Those horns went round twice, out and down and round again, like the curl on a bramble shoot that has nowhere else to go.
Abel did not run. He had kept sheep sixty years and he knew a ram that had made up its mind. So he set his basket down, picked an apple from the nearest bough, and held it out flat on his palm. The ram considered it for the length of a long breath. Then it ate, and after that it followed him down the rows the way a dog follows a man with biscuits in his coat.
That was the summer the orchard paid its debts. Every bough bent under fruit, and the ram kept the windfalls cleared so no rot got going in the grass. Come September he climbed back up the fell with his horns polished by the sun, and Abel swore he heard him laugh once at the top, a sound like a gate being shut gently.
The skull is still on the wall of the cider house, if you want to look at it. Mind the step.
