Realistic swan tattoo across a back

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large swan with its wings partly raised is tattooed across the back, with the head and neck curved into a heart-like shape at the centre. The feathers and shading are rendered in soft greys with smooth gradients and fine detail, and the ink is black and grey only. The photograph is taken outdoors from behind, with the subject's face out of frame and another person's coloured tattoos visible at the right edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The swan came up the shingle at Wrackmouth the same week the Pennick girl came home from Bristol, and nobody in the boarding house thought much of either until the bird took to sitting on the front step of number nine.

Ada Pennick kept the house and did not hold with birds indoors, so she let it be. It hissed at the milkman and took bread from the lodgers' hands, and when it lifted its wings against the wind its neck bent over into a shape old Tobias Lamb swore was a heart. A heart on a swan, he said, meant somebody had been promised something and had not yet come to collect.

The lodger in number nine was Hal Rennie, a surveyor measuring the cliffs for a railway that never got its money. He stayed on through the winter, talking to Ada over the stove about tides and tallow. In March the swan's mate came in off the bay, and the pair of them stood in the surf below the wall, wings half raised, grey as wet slate, and Ada found she could not look at them for long.

In April Hal carried his case down the lane to the omnibus. The swan walked beside him to the gate, then stopped, wings lifted, and did not follow him onto the road. Ada found a feather on the step the next morning, long and grey and perfectly dry. She pinned it above the stove, and when the bird came back to the wall she left the window of number nine open and kept the kettle hot.
