Re:stacks lettering on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A forearm is raised across bare legs, with the word re:stacks tattooed along the outer forearm in a clean, sans-serif typeface. The ink appears dark grey or black on warm skin tones. The soft, warm-toned composition shows the tattoo at an angle against a patterned bedspread and white bedding.

Kit had been restacking the returns trolley since seven, which was the only way Pauline let anyone touch the back room before the ten o'clock delivery. Books went by height, then by colour, then by whatever Kit felt like that morning, and Pauline never checked. The word had been painted over the stockroom door in cream emulsion years ago, a joke about the orders that never quite got sent: re:stacks, the shop's name, though nobody remembered who had suggested the colon.

The letter came in the second post, a brown envelope with a Hull postmark and a handwritten address for the bookseller who had sold his father an Ordnance Survey map of the Dales. Pauline read it twice at the counter and then handed it over without comment. The man wanted to know whether the sheet had been resold, whether his father's pencil notes in the margins had survived, and whether anybody there could say where it had gone.

Kit went through the stacks for an hour, sliding out maps by their spines, checking corners and cloth folds. Near the bottom of a crate of atlases from a house clearance, the sheet was rolled and tied with garden twine. The pencil notes were still there, tiny and careful: a cairn circled, a spring marked, a date from 1971. Kit wrote the reply on the back of a dispatch slip, crossed out the first line, and started again.

Dear Mr Hallam, the map is here. The shelves are sorted now, and I think you should come and see it. Pauline signed it under Kit's name without reading, and the lamp over the back room door buzzed the way it always did.
