Read More lettering across knuckles

Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two clenched fists face the camera, with the word READ MORE tattooed in capital letters across the knuckles, one letter per finger. The letters have solid black outlines with grey shading and a slightly ornate, old-style serif form. The background is blurred, showing a blue shirt and warm reddish surfaces, which keeps the focus on the lettering.

It hurt less than the look on Dolly's face when he came back in with his hands wrapped in rag.

"Well, show me," she said. He held them up, one letter to a finger, and she read it slowly, the way she read the tide tables, every word of it. "Then go and read the ledger," she said, and he did, all the way to the last page, where someone had written in pencil that the sea had kept its side of the bargain.
