STAY TRUE knuckle lettering
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two closed fists face the camera, each knuckle inked with one letter so the words STAY TRUE read across the fingers. The letters have ornate, shaded serif-style forms with bold outlines and grey fill. A grey shaded rose and further dark tattoos are visible on the forearms, against a dark shirt and a plain carpeted background.

The last of the Bramleys were coming down in the wind, and Uncle Walt was up the ladder with a bucket hooked over one elbow, cursing the wasps that had found the windfalls. I was twelve that summer and my job was to hold the ladder steady, which I took more seriously than anything anyone had asked of me before.

Every autumn he lettered the cider casks in the potting shed, working with a squirrel-hair brush and a tin of gold size, and every autumn the farm's name curled across the oak in capitals he swore would outlast the house. That year the buyers from Ledbury stopped ringing. The bank sent envelopes with red corners. Walt went quiet at supper and began measuring the orchard with a knotted rope, counting rows out loud as though the trees might be sold by the yard.
One evening I found him in the shed with a lump of pear wood and an old set of chisels, cutting letters into it with the care of a man defusing something. STAY was finished. TRUE was half carved, the R's leg still a rough ridge. I asked who it was for. He said the gate, and then he said the trees didn't care who owned them. They only wanted somebody who came back every September with a ladder.
We hung the board the following week, the grain still pale and raw. Walt lifted me onto his shoulders to check it was straight, and from up there I could see every row of Bramleys running down the hill, heavy and red, waiting for the wind to finish the job.
