Script word tattoo on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A flowing script word is tattooed along the inner forearm, running diagonally from the wrist towards the elbow. The letters are drawn in black ink with fine, tapered strokes and large looping ascenders and descenders. The hand is raised in a loose fist against a speckled countertop, with pink nail varnish and rings visible.

Their mother had a habit of writing things down. She kept a tin of old seed packets and a stub of pencil on a string, and on the last morning of December she wrote one word on the back of a feed sack: family. She made the letters so long and looping that the draught could not get under them. She pinned the sack to the kitchen door and went to bed without saying a thing.
Will read it first, coming in with the milk. Then Tom read it, and then the youngest, Jess, who was nine and could not have said why her face went hot. The word had no lines struck through it and no cross of blame. It only hung there, tall and loose, reaching from the top of the sack to the hem.
They did not make up that day. But at the thaw Tom found the heifer's old halter hung on Will's peg, and nobody asked how it got there.
