Real or Not Real script on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is the phrase Real or Not Real? written in two lines of cursive script, with the first line set above and slightly to the right of the second. The linework is thin and even, in a single dark ink with no shading. The photograph is a close, slightly angled view of the inner wrist against plain pale skin, with the lettering centred in the frame.

Dear Hester, the second cousin's painting came up on Tuesday, rolled in a flour sack and smelling of pipe smoke, and I have spent three days with a magnifier trying to decide whether the sky was painted by a dead man or a living one. Mr Ansell wants a yes or a no by Friday. I have written the question on the back of the lot card so often the card has gone soft as a glove.

The trouble is the craquelure. It runs across the sky in neat fine lines, exactly as a century of drying would make it, but when I rubbed a little spirit at the corner the crack ran beneath the varnish in a direction no oven or sunlight would take. Someone had either baked the panel or painted over the cracks with a very fine brush and a grievance. I told Mr Ansell it could be either. He said it was the most honest thing an expert had said to him in thirty years, and then asked for my invoice.
Last night I found a pencil note tucked behind the backing board, in a hand that loops the way yours did when you were copying out hymns. It said only: 'Real or not real? Keep the sky, burn the rest.' I have not burned anything. I have held the lamp to the canvas until my wrist ached, and I believe the sky is the only honest part of the thing, and the only part I cannot prove.
Come and look at it with me before Friday. Bring your good glass, and don't tell Mr Ansell you're my sister until we've finished.
