Cursive script word on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single cursive word is written in thin, black, continuous linework that rises and falls across the inner wrist and forearm. The lettering is crisp and even, with soft shading only at the edges of the strokes. The ink is black on light skin, and the word is placed diagonally across the frame against a dark background.

Dear Morag,

The ferry didn't come today, so I have had the whole afternoon to think about the handwriting on your last card. You always looped your capitals like a man running for the last bus, and I thought it a bad habit until I saw how it looked painted on the slate above the harbour shop. Mr Gunn has redone the boat names again. The Brightwater has lost its rudder letter, so it reads like an argument with itself.
Gunn asked after you. He wanted to know whether the pencil you left in the drawer was still good, because the tide tables need correcting and his hand shakes now. I said I would post it. It is in the envelope with this letter, wrapped in the blue wool you should have taken when you went.
The thing I wanted to tell you is that the gull that nested on the chimney has gone, and the morning after it went, a line of wet footprints ran from the back step all the way down to the shingle, rising and falling the way your signature does, as if someone had walked a word out to sea and changed their mind halfway. I followed it with my hand held out, not touching, the way you used to walk the wall at Easter. By the time I reached the water the prints had gone, and I stood there feeling foolish and fine.
Come home at the spring tide. The boat will take you over for nothing if you tell Gunn it is for me.
Love, Ishbel
