Realism portrait with Bob Marley scroll lettering
Realism · Black and grey · Photo
A realistic black and grey portrait of a man with a full, curly afro, looking up and slightly to the side with a parted mouth. The face is built from fine shading and soft tonal gradients, with the hair rendered in dense, textured linework. A dark scroll with cursive lettering reading Bob Marley sits across the lower part of the composition, and the tattoo is shown on a limb of bare skin.

The curls took Tomas the longest. He worked them in small, dense strokes, the way his father cut oak shavings from the lathe, until the paper looked like a thicket after frost. Mrs Aske watched from the doorway with her arms folded, certain he had got her chin wrong.

"She never looked up like that," her husband said. "She looked at the floor when she sang, so the congregation wouldn't see her face." Tomas kept shading. He had never heard Nell Aske sing, only heard the village talk about the voice that came out of Hollin Wood on summer nights, from the clearing where the oaks grew close and a person could sing to nobody and still be answered.
On the last evening he found the banner too plain. He lettered a name in a looping hand across the foot of the board, then sat back and saw the mouth was still closed. The notes were wrong too. They belonged drifting off the left shoulder towards the trees, not stacked neatly on the wall like a hymn book.
He carried the board up Hollin Lane at dusk and propped it against the first oak at the clearing's edge. Nobody came to claim it. In the morning the paint had dried, and the old men swore the mouth was open a little wider than it had been, as if someone had been humming to it through the night.
