Dorothy Quill had sold tickets at the back of Mabb's Travelling Fair for eleven summers, and she could tell from the crush at the flap which bout would pull the coppers out of pockets. Tonight it was the Tuesday wrestling, held in a tent that smelled of hot sawdust and fried onions, and the man on the boards was Ray Pennock, who had not lost a fall since Whitby.

Ray wore the same red and yellow headband every night, knotted tight at the back of his head. Between bouts he sat on an upturned crate behind the ropes and stared at nothing, eyes wide as coins, pulling faces for the children who pressed their hands against the canvas. Dorothy thought it was the only honest thing about him. The rest was greasepaint and a voice bigger than his chest.
Last Tuesday the showman, a man called Sully who also ran the dodgems, had wanted Ray to take a dive for a local lad who had paid double. Ray said no, quietly, and went back out. Dorothy watched him lift the lad clean off the mat and set him down like a sack of flour, so gently that nobody got hurt except the lad's pride.
When the tent emptied, Ray folded the headband into his jacket pocket and walked out past the big wheel into the dark field. Dorothy found it later on the ticket table, still warm from his head. She pinned it to the inside of her cash tin, where the coppers were kept, and went to see about the lights.
