Abstract watercolour motif on a thigh
Geometric · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A tattooist works with a rotary machine on a large abstract motif on the outer thigh, with bold red, orange, pink and yellow shading. Loose turquoise and blue washes extend beyond the main form, and thin black geometric outlines frame the design. The tattooist wears black gloves, and a sleeve tattoo is visible on their forearm.

Dear Cassius, the kiln at the lower workshop cracked again on Tuesday, so the cinnabar went onto the wall in a hurry and you will find my lines running where I meant them to stop. Do not scold the boy who mixed the madder. He ground it fine enough. The water was simply too warm, and the colour bled past the ink like a fish slipping a net.

I have been painting the prow for Hermon's new vessel, the one with the red eye on its bow. He wanted the hull cut in straight black lines, as if a surveyor had drawn them with a rule, and then he wanted the colour to float free of those lines. I told him paint does not obey a rule, but he paid the advance in silver, so I gave him what he asked for: the frame of a carpenter's square, and a cloud of orange and pink that spills over the edge and runs down onto the bare wood.
Here is the strange part. When the light came through the shutter this morning, the turquoise wash I laid at the stern, meant only as a shadow, looked more finished than anything else on the panel. I have left it. Hermon will grumble, then he will sail with it, and the sea will wear away the outline long before it touches the colour.
Write to me when the kiln is mended. Tell Mother the goat is well.
