Realistic black and grey rose on a hand
Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A large open rose fills the back of a hand, with petals rendered in soft grey shading and sharp highlights along their edges. Fine stippled dots and smooth gradients create depth, and two raised water droplets sit on the lower petals. The composition is centred on the rose, with the fingers and wrist fading out at the edges of the frame against a pale background.

Sit yourself on the coal box and mind the stove, it spits when the river's high. You want the grey rose story, and I'll tell it the way my mother told it, with the kettle on and the lamp turned low.

Tobias Quill came up the cut at Thrapston in the wet spring of 1907 with a tin trunk, a bad knee and one rose cutting he would not part with. Nobody on the towpath would take a rose that refused to bloom, so he kept it in a cracked jam jar on the cabin roof and tipped the water over it every morning. The petals came in grey, like smoke that had decided to hold a shape.
Then came the dry summer when the locks ran low and the barges sat aground for weeks. The rose did not die. It opened, slow and thick-petalled, and on the lowest petals two drops of water stood up, round as glass, and would not run off however the boat rocked. Men walked up from three villages to look. A surveyor from the Lock Company tried to flick them away with his pencil, and the drops simply sat there, trembling, catching the lamplight.
Tobias died the next winter and left the Patience and everything aboard her to his nephew Walter, who never believed a word of it. Then one January morning Walter went to water the jar and found the frost had furred every petal white, every one except those two drops, which were still wet. He swore they were warm to the touch. I have never once been able to tell him he was wrong.
