Dorota had been carving the same rose for three days, and on the fourth morning Gil finally told her the petals were fine. She didn't believe him. She ran her thumb along the outer edge of the bloom, where the stone curled back like a page left out in weather, and felt for the place where the chisel had bitten too deep. Gil went back to his tea by the van. The yard smelled of wet limestone and diesel.

The customer was a widow from Halifax who had asked for something that would not look like every other rose in the cemetery. She had brought a photograph of her husband's hand, the one he used to rest on the allotment gate, and said the rose should look as if it had just been rained on. Dorota had laughed at that, then gone quiet, because it was exactly what she had been failing to do.

On the fifth morning the sky cleared early. The light came low across the yard and caught the lower petals, and there, in the hollow where two of them met, a single bead of water sat on the stone. Dorota had not carved it. She had worked in the dry all week, but overnight the dew had gathered in the shallow cup she'd cut, and it had not run off. She bent close and saw it throw a tiny bright curve across the surface.

She left it there. When the widow came at noon, she looked at the petals for a long time and said nothing at all. She only pressed her gloved fingers to the cold edge of the stone, as if checking that it was dry.
