Grey rose tattoo on a shoulder
Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A large rose with layered petals sits across the top of the shoulder, with dark leaves trailing down and out from its base. The petals are shaded in soft greys and browns with fine detail along the edges, and the leaves are solid black with textured highlights. The two side-by-side photographs show the same shoulder from the front and from a side angle, with plain light backgrounds.

For the third time that morning, Ines pulled the lorry onto the verge outside Tolland Wells and watched the heat shiver off the tarmac. The seed packet on the dashboard had gone soft at the corners. Her brother had written the address on the back in pencil, a farm forty miles past the salt flats, and beneath it: Mam's roses have gone grey with the dust, bring what you can.

She had not expected anyone to answer the gate. A woman in a faded blue smock came down the path with a trowel still in her hand, looked at the cuttings wrapped in wet newspaper, and said nothing for a long while. Then she led Ines round the back of the house to a bed where the bushes stood like old men in coats, petals the colour of ash, leaves gone black at the edges from the wind.
"They were red once," the woman said. "My husband swore they'd outlast the road."
Ines knelt and pressed her thumb into the soil. It was cool an inch down, which felt like a small miracle. She split the stems with a knife, slanted each cut the way her brother had taught her, and tucked them in beside the dead wood.
They drove back at dusk with the windows down. Ines kept thinking about the woman's hands, how steady they were when she lifted the first cutting to the last of the light, the petals layered and grey as smoke, as if the rose had decided to keep its colour only where it was needed. Nothing bloomed that night, or for a month. But when the next letter came, in her brother's careful hand, it said only: the grey one opened.
