Realistic black and grey rose on a limb

Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A large open rose fills most of the frame, with its petals curling inward toward a tight centre. The petals and leaves are rendered in soft grey shading with fine linework and bright highlights, giving them volume. The image is in black and grey only, with the tattoo centred on the skin against a wooden floor.

The mule bells had stopped by the time Maud reached the cairn, which meant the animals had more sense than she did. She shifted the wet sacking on her hip and looked back down the switchbacks, where the valley had gone the colour of pewter under a lid of cloud. Her brother had told her a rose would never take above the tree line. He had said it kindly, the way he said most things he did not expect her to argue with.

The cutting was no longer than her hand, a dark stem with three serrated leaves, and it had been rooted for a month in a jam jar on the sill of the shepherd's hut. She knelt in the lee of the stones and pressed it into a crack where the scree held a little soil and a skin of meltwater. The wind came over the col in long, patient shoves. Somewhere below, a stone let go and rattled away down the slope, and she thought of the roses she had seen once in the lower town, opened wide over the market stalls like hands offering change.

Her cutting did not open. It drew in instead, its petals folding over one another toward a tight, hard centre, as if it meant to keep its own heart out of the weather. Through the night she sat against the cairn with her knees under her chin and listened to the thin hiss of frost settling on the leaves. By morning the leaves were black with cold and the petals looked like grey paper rolled too tight to unroll.

She was reaching for the jar to pack up when the sun cleared the ridge and struck the stones. A single outer petal lifted, very slightly, the way a sleeper turns over. Maud sat back on her heels and laughed out loud, and the sound went down the pass ahead of her, and nobody was there to hear it but the bells, still a long way off.
