Realistic cardinal on a branch on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A male northern cardinal perches side on along a grey branch that crosses the lower part of the design. The bird is shaded in smooth gradients of red, with orange on the beak and darker tones on the wings and tail, and the black face mask is rendered in soft shading. The design sits centrally on a pale forearm against a plain, slightly out-of-focus background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The thaw has come early and the pass is still half snow when Bet, your uncle's mule, refuses the third switchback. You stop at the cairn to rest and wait for the wind to drop. Above the scree the sky has the colour of wet slate, and the path ahead is a grey thread you can barely see.

A cardinal lands on the dead larch beside the cairn. It is the only red thing for a mile. Its mask is black as a coal thumbprint, and it regards you the way the customs clerk at the border post did, sideways and unimpressed. You tell it your business, which is mostly that you are cold and late. It says nothing, but it doesn't leave either, and the wind seems to fall away wherever it sits.

Your grandmother used to say that a redbird on a grey branch means someone has kept a lamp lit on the far side. Nobody in Ardvarn has kept a lamp for you since you were nine. Still, you shoulder the pack and lead Bet on. The bird rides the branches down the slope ahead of you, dropping from larch to larch, always settling just where the path bends and the snow looks deepest.

At the summit the cloud tears open and the far valley lies green and empty under the sun. The larch is still there, stuck in a drift, but the bird is gone. Below, in the window of the inn at Corrie, a single lamp is burning. You are not sure the bird had anything to do with it, and you take the last stretch at a run.
