Realistic cat face on the back of a hand

Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A realistic tattoo of a cat's face covers the back of a hand, showing the head, eyes, nose and whiskers. The fur is built up with soft grey shading and fine dark strokes, giving depth and texture. The cat fills the frame and follows the shape of the hand, with a darker tattooed area visible at the top edge.

Nobody on the Hallowell Brothers' fair had the heart to shift the tabby from the ticket box once the rain came in off the estuary, so I sold the last of the Thursday tickets perched on an upturned crate with his warm weight pressed against my elbow. He had a way of watching the queue that made people pay twice. Dad called him the Inspector. He ate nothing but kippers and never left the box until the last ride had closed.

That night the generator coughed and died halfway through the waltzers. In the sudden dark the cat stood up on the counter, tail straight as a clothes prop, and stared at the far corner of the field. I followed him with a torch. He walked the length of the dead rides without once looking back, past the swings and the hook-a-duck pond, and stopped under the oak where the old showground gate had rusted shut years before I was born. A purse lay in the roots, sodden, with a child's name written on the inside flap in biro.

I knew the name. Terry Nash had come to the ticket box that afternoon, crying over a lost purse and a mother who would skin him alive, and I had told him to check the dodgems. He had not checked the dodgems. He had checked nothing, because nothing had been lost in any place a person would look.

I carried the purse back across the mud with the cat trotting ahead of me. At the caravans he stopped, sat down on the step of the Nash family's van, and looked at me with those grey, unblinking eyes until I knocked. When the door opened he rose, stretched, and walked back to the ticket box without a backward glance, as if the account had been settled and the books were finally balanced.
