Cream cat portrait with blue eyes on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a cream-coloured cat with pale blue eyes, turned slightly to the side and set within a muted teal and ochre ornamental frame. The fur is rendered with soft, blended shading and fine highlights, giving a realistic, painterly finish. Colour is used throughout, with peach and cream tones dominating the cat and teal and gold in the border.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Abernethy wanted the cat done before the blue went out of its eyes, which she said was happening already, though I could see nothing of the kind. The cat was called Sorrel. It was cream all over, the colour of clotted cream left out on a windowsill, and its eyes were so pale a blue they looked rinsed. I had been hired to frame the painting, not paint it, but the painter had broken his wrist falling off a ladder in a Cheltenham orchard, and the commission arrived at my workshop with a crate of gilt and a note that said only, Do the border as you see fit.

So I did. I chose a teal that had been stored too long at the back of a coach house and an ochre the colour of wet hay, and I laid the scrolls and leaves on the board the way my father taught me, one tap of the mallet at a time. The cat I left alone. Each morning I lifted the cover and found it looking a little further to the left than the day before, as if something beyond the frame had called its name.

Mrs Abernethy came on the last Thursday of August, when the window was thick with wasps and the smell of windfalls drifted in off the lane. She stood before the portrait a long while. Then she said, 'She's gone to the orchard,' and I did not argue, because I had seen the gaze too. Sorrel had been looking at those apple trees since the first day, and I had only been framing what was already there.

She paid in cash and asked me to hang it above the kitchen table, where the light from the back door would catch the blue. When I left, the cat was turned to the window, and there was a smear of windfall juice on the gilt at the top corner that I had not put there.
