Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A realistic portrait of a long-haired grey and white cat with green eyes, facing forward and seated on the forearm. Dear Mr Abernethy,

The big top came down on Tuesday, though you'll have heard that already from the council man with his clipboard. What he won't have told you is that Marigold stood in the middle of the sawdust the whole time the crew pulled the poles, sitting bolt upright the way she does, as if the ring were still lit and the red backdrop still had some gloss left on it. Nobody had the heart to shoo her off.

I've counted the takings twice and the figure is no better the second time. Eleven pounds for Saturday's matinee, and half of that went on the generator diesel. The lion has been sold to a farm near Lincoln, and the two ponies went to a girl in Pontefract who promised to write. Our Ruby is at her mother's. I'm told the wagons will be auctioned in March unless someone finds a buyer willing to take the lot, including the cat, who has never once in nine years agreed to be carried anywhere.

I had thought about leaving her at the winter quarters with the caretaker, who likes her well enough. But I sat up last night with a tin of sardines and the lamp, and she came and settled on the trunk where the red cloth is folded. She looked at me the way she used to look at the trapeze, as though she expected me to do something clever. So I'm sending the trunk on the Thursday coach and she's riding on top of it. Write to me care of the depot and tell me if you'll have a corner for her.
