Realistic compass and map on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A brass pocket compass sits in the centre of the design, with a rolled map, a loose ring and faint continent outlines and latitude lines behind it. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft grey transitions and highlights on the metal. Warm brown tones dominate the piece, and the composition wraps over the upper arm and top of the shoulder.

The ink on the western sheet has run again, and Mestor will not let you touch the vellum until it dries, so you sit on the cistern step in Alexandria with the brass compass in your lap and watch the lamp smoke bend towards the harbour. The needle has been wrong since the spring. You have tapped the case, breathed on the glass, and held it to the sun, and still it swings north-west as though the city itself had shifted.

Mestor says the fault is yours. He is probably right. You were the one who carried the instrument up from the Pharos workshop wrapped in a fishing net, and you were the one who let it fall on the quay steps when the Nubian boat came in. Under the cracked glass, the card has a hairline scratch that runs straight through the letters of the wind rose, and every line you draw now seems to lean a little to the left.
On the third night you stop trying to fix it. You unroll the old chart instead, the one the captain left in pawn for his debts, and lay the brass beside it. The lines of latitude curl across the sea like the ribs of a wrecked hull. Where the coast of Iberia should be there is only a smudge of charcoal, and where your own hand once marked the Pillars of Heracles you find a thumbprint of ochre. Someone has been here before you, and they navigated by feel.
You take the stylus and begin again, drawing a fresh meridian beside the old one, trusting the needle less and the stars more. By dawn the lamp is out, the ring of the compass hangs cold from your wrist, and the line you have drawn runs true to a coast nobody has named yet.
