Realistic cow and daisies on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A large tattoo of a black and white dairy cow's face fills the upper arm, with its muzzle, ears and eyes rendered in detail. Three purple-pink daisies sit at the lower left of the cow, and soft pink shading surrounds the design. The wearer's face is not visible, and a blurred tattoo event setting with a table and chairs is behind her.

The boat was already knocking against the slip when Old Ailsa found the cow lying down in the top field, chewing slowly among the daisies as though the mainland had never been invented. Her son had crossed on the Tuesday ferry with a bill of sale and a coil of rope. He had not grown up on Skarra, so he did not know that the black and white cow, Meg, had been born in the byre the winter the big gale took the chapel roof, or that nobody on the island had ever needed to sell a cow that lay down when you asked her to stand.

He went up the field with the rope over his shoulder and the buyer waiting in the boat. Meg lifted her great head and looked at him with the patience of someone who had seen a hundred men come up that slope with rope. Her muzzle was flecked with pollen and her breath smelled of clover. When he reached for the halter she stretched out her tongue and licked the salt from the back of his hand, slow and certain, the way she had licked Ailsa's hand every morning for eleven years.
"That's the thing about her," Ailsa said from the gate. "She picks her field and she keeps it. Her mother did the same. The old people used to say the island would keep its milk so long as one cow was willing to lie down in the daisies."
He laughed, because he was tired and the tide was turning. Then he sat down beside the cow in the flowers, the rope slack in his lap, and watched the ferry pull away from the slip without them. By the next spring there were three more cows in the top field, and nobody on Skarra had been asked to pick a single daisy.
