Realistic bulldog portrait on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large realistic portrait of a bulldog's face fills the upper arm and shoulder, showing deep skin folds, a broad muzzle, a dark eye and a shiny pink nose. The shading is soft and detailed, with fine highlights on the wrinkles and fur texture. Only black and grey ink is used, and the cropped frame shows a bearded chin and black tank top at the edge.

He went down the shaft every morning on the first cage, tucked under Ned Carrick's arm, because the men liked a dog that didn't bark at the dark. Nobody ever taught him to be brave. He just sat where the air was thickest and sniffed the timber for the water that sometimes came in before a fall. The night the bell rang twice and then went quiet, Tolly was the only one who went to the wrong side of the stable, and he sat there, broad and grey as a doorstep, until the rescue men found the gap in the rock.

Ned came up the drift at dawn with a cut across his brow and a lamp that wouldn't stay lit. The dog was still sitting, nose wet, that big pink snout lifted towards the shaft. Ned's wife, Maud, said she had never seen a creature look so put out to be right.

Tolly lived another eleven years on the pit-head step, facing the shaft. When the cages stopped running he kept facing it anyway, grey as slag and creased like a dropped glove.
