Realistic dolphin head on a shoulder

Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A dolphin's head in profile, with its beak pointing left and a detailed eye, is tattooed across the shoulder and upper chest. The head is rendered with smooth, soft shading in grey and blue-grey tones, and a dark fin sits below it. The image is a close crop of the skin, with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

The reunion is held in the sports hall at Harbour Road Secondary, and the first thing you notice is that someone has kept the mosaic. Above the bench where the coats used to pile, a dolphin swims across the tiled wall, its beak aimed at the fire door and one grey fin lifted as if it has only just surfaced. Nobody remembers who laid it. Dinah Pascoe, head girl the year the tiles went up, says it was the groundsman's idea, though Mr Ruddock always denied it.

You stand beneath it with a paper cup of warm cava, and Dinah tells you what everyone else has forgotten. The dolphin had an eye made from a blue glass marble, and in the summer of 1988 someone prised it out with a compass point. The caretaker searched the drains. Nobody confessed. You were the one who dared, and you kept the marble in a biscuit tin under your bed for thirty years, because you wanted to know whether it still held the sea.

You open your bag and take out the tin, its lid rusted at the edges. The grout around the empty socket has crumbled to a ring of paler grey. You crouch by the wall and press the marble in with your thumb. It fits, snug as a held breath, and for a moment the dolphin seems to turn its head and look at you.

Dinah laughs and says it's the only thing from that year that ever came back. You say nothing. The fin keeps its slow, lifted curve towards the door, as though it has been waiting all this time for the bell to ring so it can go home.
