Realistic eye, hands and flower with wing

Realism · Ribs · Mixed · Photo

A large, detailed eye sits above a pair of grey hands that cup an orange flower with frilled petals. A feathered wing fades in soft grey and pink on the left edge of the design. The eye and hands are rendered in smooth black and grey shading with fine lashes and highlights, while the flower provides the only strong colour against the dark background.

Nobody in Cold Harbour Row sold day lilies after dark, so Ada Kettlewell kept hers under an upturned bucket behind the chapel wall, where the damp couldn't reach them and the constable wouldn't think to look. Everyone knew the eye above the chapel door never shut. The mason who carved it had been paid in bread and had asked only that it see every wrong done in the parish, and the parish had grown careful ever since.

Her granddaughter Nell was twelve and not careful at all. One wet night in November she lifted the bucket, took the best bloom in both hands, and set off through the mill yard, where her brother Tom had been on the night shift since the frost took the Pennine wool. The lily was orange and frilled at the edges, the colour of a coal that hasn't decided to go out. Halfway across the yard a grey shape unfolded on the wall beside her, a feathered thing like a wing torn from a pigeon, and Nell felt the stone eye above the chapel turn its gaze onto her back.

Tom was asleep on a sack of carded wool when she found him. She shook him awake and held out the flower, and he laughed at her, then stopped laughing, because the petals had started to open in her cupped palms, though nothing had touched them but the cold.

"That's for whoever's watching," he said quietly. "Take it back to Gran before the foreman sees."

But Nell heard a creak above the gate, and when she looked up the stone eye had closed for the first time in a hundred years, and the lily was warm enough to steam in the rain.
