Realistic feather tattoo on the hip
Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A single feather is drawn across the side of the hip, angled diagonally with its quill pointing towards the front. The barbs are rendered with fine, layered shading that gives the feather a soft, three-dimensional look. The tattoo is black and grey, set against lightly toned skin and a white top, with a tiled floor and boots visible in the background.

Sit closer, you lot, and mind the draught from the platform doors, because this is a winter story and it wants a cold room. My grandfather drove the night mail out of Carlisle for thirty-one years, and he always said the best thing he ever found was not on the line at all. It was a grey feather lying on the cinder path behind Platform Four, stuck to the frost like someone had pressed it there to dry. He picked it up and tucked it in his cap band, and that was the start of it.

That winter the signal box at Brockley Junction began to lose its lamps, one by one, every Thursday, and nobody could say how. Mrs Hadley, who kept the buffet, swore she saw a dark shape sweep along the roof of the waiting room at dusk, long and slow, with a quill-end tapping the slates like a pen on a desk. Grandfather watched the eaves for three Thursdays with a flask of tea and his feather in his cap. On the fourth, the thing came down, folding itself small until it was no bigger than a rook, and perched on the lamp bracket to look at him.
It asked him, in a voice like paper turning, whether he meant to keep what was his. He understood then that the feather was a ticket, and he had punched it by picking it up. So he gave it back, quill first, and the bird took it and was gone up into the sleet, and the lamps came back on in the box that very hour. He never once rode a train after that without a feather in his pocket, and he never once told the company why.
