Fine line black infinity symbol joined to the word love in script on the ribs, partly covered by a white top.

Infinity symbol with love script on ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a thin black outline infinity symbol with the word love written in script across its right loop. The tattoo sits on darker skin just below a white top, and a long purple braid falls over the right edge of the frame. The linework is clean and even, and the composition is centred on the tattoo with a soft, slightly warm light.

Dear Nell,

The relief keeper came over on Tuesday's boat with a crate of tinned peaches and the news that the mainland has finally fitted a new lamp in the Skerry light. It doesn't turn. It just sits there, fixed and white, throwing its light at the same patch of sea whether anyone is watching or not. I have been up the tower every night since, listening to the old clockwork ticking down for the last time and trying not to count the sweeps.

You asked in your last letter whether I ever wanted to leave. I did, the winter the sea took the boathouse. But the lamp room still has the sill Margaret scratched on the morning she went back to her sister's, a sideways eight with the word love curled across one loop in her slanting hand. The old lens threw that shape out over the water every few seconds, so ships far off saw a figure that never ended. I used to think she was being fanciful. Tonight I understood that it was simply true of light, and of her, and of you.

The new lamp will not carry that figure. The engineers will oil it and forget it. So before the boat comes back for me, I am going to climb up one last time and rub Margaret's eight clear of the grime with my thumb, so that whoever comes after me can see it too. Then I will sit beside the old mechanism and let it wind down, the way a clock does when nobody has the heart to wind it again.

Yours, as ever, Tom
