Aries zodiac symbol on the hip

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close crop of a bold black Aries zodiac symbol, drawn as a single solid line with curled ram's horns, sitting on bare skin at the side of the hip. The lines look smooth and even, with no shading. The photograph is in colour, with a pale blue denim waistband and a black top in the frame, and a hand with pink nail polish rests near the tattoo.

Tuesday, late March. Locked through at Hatton with the water still cold enough to ache in the knuckles. Tomasz went ahead with the windlass while I held the tiller against the wind coming off the fields. Dad always said a boat tells you its name by how it turns in a lock. This one has turned badly since we bought it, so I am writing down everything I know before I forget how little that is.

The previous owner left a brass plate under the stern deck, unscrewed and wrapped in a carrier bag. On it, a ram's head drawn as one unbroken line, the horns curled tight like the ends of a fern. On the back, in biro: Ram, first sign, Mum's birthday. I asked Mrs Oduya at the chandlery what it meant. She laughed and said it is the sign that goes first into the cold. That is what the boat has been doing all winter: nosing into the mud, going first, refusing to be steered.

I screwed the plate to the cabin side above the waterline, where the paint is still tacky from the touch-up. Tomasz says it looks like a question mark that has given up. I think it looks like something that wants to be told where to go and will go there anyway.

We reached the bottom gate at dusk. The lamp in the keeper's cottage came on, and the brass caught it, bright for a moment, and the boat leaned into the current as if it had been waiting all winter to be let out. I have left the tiller unlashed. Tomorrow we will see whether it wants to lead or to follow.
