Black and grey realism tattoo of a shaded feather on the side of the torso, just above the waistband of a pair of jeans.

Realistic feather tattoo on the side of the torso

Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A single feather runs diagonally across the skin, with its quill curving from the upper left to a finely detailed tip at the lower right. The barbs are rendered with soft gradients and crisp dark strokes that suggest texture and depth. The image is a black and white close-up, with the feather filling most of the frame against pale skin.

Dear Nell,

The gulls have given up on the north tower, but the rooks have not. Since you left, Mr Pryce from the trust has had me counting stones along the curtain wall with a clipboard, and I have counted the same forty-one twice because the wind keeps lifting my pages. This morning I found a feather wedged in a crack under the arrow slit, a long one, nearly the length of my forearm, dark at the tip and grey along the shaft. I'd like to say I was sensible about it. I climbed the scaffold anyway and held it up against the sky.

It was a rook's, or possibly a crow's, and the quill was still whole, which is rarer than you'd think. The barbs had split a little near the lower edge where the weather had worried them, and when I ran my thumb back along them they stood up and then lay down again, the way Dad's hair used to. I thought of the old steward who wrote in 1743 that the ravens were the only tenants who never paid rent and never left. Those were his words. I've been pinning them to the gatehouse noticeboard all week for visitors to ignore.

I've put the feather in the glovebox of the trust's van, where it is safe from the wind but not from Mr Pryce, who will want it logged. Perhaps I'll tell him it's a fallen stone of a different sort.

Come up at Easter. Bring your good sketchbook. I want you to draw it properly, the way you drew the swallows on the bathroom tiles, and then tell me honestly whether it looks like something that fell or something that chose to land.

Love, Ruth
