Realistic feather with water droplets on upper back
Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo
A large feather runs diagonally across the skin, with its barbs and central shaft rendered in soft grey shading that gives it volume. Several glossy water droplets with highlights sit along the feather, and two small teal beads mark the base of the quill. The image is a close crop of the upper back with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

The fair came over the moor the week after the first frost, and nobody in Thornbeck remembered sending for it. There were three caravans painted the colour of wet slate, a carousel with no horses, and a man in a grey coat who sold feathers at the gate for a penny each. He would not say where he got them. Mae Pelham, who kept the bakery and had no patience for nonsense, bought one for her son Tobin because the boy would not stop crying about his lost kite.

The feather was longer than her arm and grey as rain on a slate roof, with a quill tied at its base by two green glass beads. When Tobin held it up, the morning dew on the grass beyond the gate gathered along its length in bright, round drops, each one holding a small clear sky. They did not fall. Mae told him to put it down. He did not put it down, and by evening the drops had grown heavier, and the fair had moved on without a sound, leaving only the ring of flattened grass where the carousel had stood.
They found Tobin in the morning on the ridge above the moor, arms out, the feather gone from his hand. The dew on his shoulder had gathered into beads that would not wipe away, and his mother said afterwards that she had never seen him so calm. Every autumn since, the bakery shutters go up before dawn, and someone in Thornbeck walks out to the ridge with a penny in hand, just in case the grey coat comes back to sell another.
