A large, detailed rose with tightly layered petals is shown on the inner wrist, with a small bud and leaves at the lower edge. A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rose-warden of Hollin Vale had told you that the grey roses only grew where the old mill had burned, so you went up the north path with a spade over one shoulder and a tin of salt pork in your coat. Ten winters of rain had raked the ash into long low ridges. Nothing green was supposed to live there. You knelt at the third ridge anyway and dug with your hands until your nails split.

The bud came first, no bigger than a thumbnail and pale as wet slate. For four days you sat beside it and fed it river water from a cracked cup while the wind tried to lift your hat into the gorse. The gardeners from Carrow had sent men up to laugh at you. They stopped laughing when the bloom opened and showed its layers, each petal shaded darker where it folded, as though someone had drawn it in pencil and then breathed on the edges to soften them.

The warden came back with two guards and a sealed letter that named you a thief. She wanted the plant, and the plant was worth more than the mill, the vale and her good opinion put together. You had already taken a cutting, wrapped it in moss, and buried it under the step of a cottage three valleys east, where no one would think to dig. When she stood over the blackened ridge and found nothing but ash, you were already pouring tea for the guards in the kitchen.

Every spring the wardens still walk the north path. Every spring the bush under your window is a little taller, its leaves the colour of a rain cloud, and the bloom still opens slowly, petal by petal, as if it has all the time in the world.
