Realism · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A woman's face in profile blends into a skull on the calf, with flowing hair lines wrapping around the design. Below, a detailed eagle head with a sharply rendered eye and beak sits against the lower leg. The shading is smooth and highly detailed, with soft greys and deep blacks creating depth, set against a tiled floor in the background.

The snow had come early to Carn Dhu that year, and the path over the saddle was gone by noon. Ilse Maddock tied her rope to the last fence post and looked back at the valley, where the lamps of Hollin were already lit. Her brother had gone up for the goats two days before and not come down. She had watched an eagle circling the col since dawn, and it had not once turned away.

She found the skull first, half buried where the drift lay thin. It was an old one, the jaw still hinged, and the eye socket was packed with frozen moss. Beside it lay a pair of boots, laced and empty. The eagle dropped from the ridge and settled on a boulder a stone's throw off, watching her with one hard yellow eye. Her grandmother had told her the pass takes a face in payment for a road, and a road must be paid for again each winter.

Ilse unwound the wool from her throat and held it out to the bird, the way you would offer bread to a stray dog. The eagle did not come. So she sang the names of every shepherd who had gone up and not come down, and the wind carried them along the ridge until the bird lifted, talons folding, and took the scarf in its beak.

When she reached the far side the snow stopped. Her brother's footprints led down into the trees, and above her the eagle circled once over the col, its shadow long across the stones. The wind was cold on her cheekbones, and she walked down after him without looking back.
