Fishing hook tattoo on a foot
Realism · Other · Mixed · Photo
A three-dimensional fishing hook with a frayed line trails across the top of a foot, with the barb appearing to break through the skin. The hook is rendered with smooth grey shading and bluish highlights on the shank, while the torn skin around it has dark red and brown shading. The close crop centres the hook on the foot and toes.

Mind your feet on the wet planks, boy, because the sea has a long memory and a short temper. I'll tell you how the Marigold lost her best hook off the Dogger Bank in the winter of the big gale, and how it came back aboard a month later, still hungry.

Skipper Halloran swore a cod had taken it. Cook swore the bosun had sold it to a Hull pawnbroker for a bottle of rum. Nobody told the truth, which was that the hook had been bent onto a tarred hemp line nobody had checked since Whitby, and when the gale snapped it, the whole length went over the rail like a wet ribbon, singing through the blocks until the last of it slid under.
Six weeks on, off the Faroes, young Tam Renshaw was mending nets in the lee of the wheelhouse when he felt a tug at his ankle, gentle as a child asking for a biscuit. He looked down and there was the hook, sunk just above his toes, the old line trailing back over the side into black water. Four men hauled, and not one of them could say whether the sea was pulling or the hook was pulling back.
Tam kept the hook afterwards, and the mark with it, and he'd show it to anyone who asked. Every time, he said the same thing: you can cut a line, lad, but you can't cut a sea's mind. Then he'd tap the shank with his thumb, and the metal rang like a bell that had been waiting a long time for someone to answer it.
