Realistic lion face on the back of a hand

Realism · Hand · Mixed · Photo

A realistic lion's face fills the back of a hand, with the mane spreading toward the wrist and the muzzle, whiskers and nose drawn over the knuckles. The linework is soft and the shading builds smooth tonal gradients in greys and black, with lighter highlights on the nose and chin. Small blue-tinted eyes give the design its focal point against the pale blue backdrop.

Sit down, sit down, the soup will keep and so will my story. You have all heard that lions are proud, and that is true, but pride is only a mane worn in daylight. This one was called Frost by the other cubs, because his eyes were the pale blue of a February sky, and he was never once let near the warm stones at the river's edge.

When the winter came down the valley, he walked out past the last thorn tree with nothing but a red thread in his teeth. The thread belonged to the miller's daughter, who had asked the sun for a husband who could find his way home in fog. Nobody had ever carried a thread that far. The fog rolled over the ridge and the lion walked into it, listening for the sound of the river the way you might listen for a friend calling your name.

He reached the stone house at dusk, shaking, his mane heavy with rime. The miller's daughter took the thread, looked into his eyes for a long time, and said that a face which did not look away was the only lamp a traveller needed. She tied the thread to the door latch, and it glowed red through the fog for the rest of the winter, so no one in the valley ever lost their way.

So when you lift your cup tonight, look at the hand that holds it. Those are his eyes. He is still watching the road, and he is still waiting for someone brave enough to come home through the weather.
