Black and grey realism tattoo of a lion's head with a full mane, placed on the calf.

Realistic lion portrait on a calf

Realism · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A lion's head faces slightly to the left, with a full, flowing mane shaded in soft greys and deep blacks. The fur, whiskers and amber-tinted eyes are rendered with fine shading, and the nose is strongly darkened to add depth. The tattoo wraps the length of a lower leg against a grey tarmac background, with the mane fading into the skin at the bottom edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tomas Hale had been kneading since the church clock struck three, and he did not look up when the back door gave its tired creak. The ovens were roaring, flour lay thick on the bench like first snow, and the only light came from the lamp over the proving racks. Whatever stood in the doorway would have to wait its turn, he thought, the same as everyone.

It was a lion. It filled the frame with its great head lowered, and its mane was grey smoke in the lamplight, heavy with the dust of the lane. Its eyes were the colour of the honey his mother kept in a jar beside the flour bin. It did not roar. It breathed in slowly, the way a man smells a loaf that has come out well, and the whole room smelled of crust and yeast.

Tomas tore the heel from the morning's first batch and set it on the floor. The lion took it with a care that was almost polite, then lay down beside the cooling rack and watched him work. They kept that vigil together until the window went from black to the colour of ash. Tomas talked of nothing: the price of rye, his brother's goat, the cart due at six. The lion listened as if every word was bread.

At quarter to six Tomas drew the bolt and pointed to the lane. The lion rose, shook the flour from its mane in a soft cloud, and walked out onto the empty road. Halfway along, where the tarmac ran pale with frost, its mane lost its edges and then its colour, until only the amber eyes were left, turning back. Tomas stood in the doorway with the dough cooling in his hands, and on the bench he found a single long hair, gold as a crust, which he kept in the flour tin for years.
