Lion and lamb on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large tattoo of a lion's head, with its mane filling the upper part of the design, sits above a smaller lamb's face. The fur, mane and eyes are shaded in smooth black and grey tones with fine detail. The design fills most of the frame against plain skin.

The flock came down off Caddon Ridge the week the bracken turned, and by the third morning you had counted them twice and come up one short. Your father said foxes. Mrs Pryce at the lych gate said the old lion had come back to the wood, the one her grandmother swore walked the beech line before the mill was built. You laughed at her, then took the lantern and went looking anyway, because the gap in the hedge was too neat for a fox.

The trees at the edge of the village smelled of wet leaf and rust. You followed a track of flattened ferns to a clearing where a stone trough had split in two. There was no blood. The lamb lay folded under the eaves of an ash, legs tucked beneath it, and beside it, so still you took him for a fallen trunk, lay the lion. His mane spread across the leaf litter like a dark stain. When he lifted his head, the lantern caught his eyes, pale as frost on the gate, and he looked at you without any hurry at all.
He did not rise. He lowered his great head until his jaw rested on the lamb's back, and the lamb, which should have bolted, went on working at grass that was not there. You understood then that the lamb had not been taken. It had been carried, and the lion was keeping it warm against the cold that would come down off the ridge before the snow.
At first light you walked the flock home with the lamb trotting at your heels. When you looked back, the clearing was empty except for a single grey hair caught on the bark of the ash, bright as a thread of wool.
