Colour realism tattoo of two peonies with green leaves and buds across a woman's upper back and shoulder blade.

Realistic peonies across a upper back

Realism · Back · Colour · Photo

Two large peony blooms sit across the upper back, one pale pink-grey at the top and one deeper pink below, with green leaves and small closed buds linking them. The petals are rendered with soft gradients, fine veining and highlights that give a naturalistic, dimensional look. The flowers are colour-saturated against the neutral skin tone, and the composition follows the curve of the shoulder blade.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dilys had been at the bench since three, the radio low on the shelf above the proving drawer, and the first light hadn't yet reached the back window. She was making peonies for Saturday's wedding cake, three tiers of them, because the bride had sent a photograph of an old painting with one line underneath: 'like this, but please don't let them look dead.'

The trick, her mother had told her, was to stop thinking about petals and think about paper thin enough to see the lamp through. Dilys rolled the gum paste until it was nearly translucent, cut each petal, and cupped it over a ball of foam so it set with a curl at the edge. The pale grey-mauve outer layers went first. The deeper pink heart came last, with petal dust brushed on by a fan brush so the colour gathered where the light would catch it.

Around four, Tomasz from the dairy came in with the milk crates and stopped to look. 'They're not real,' he said, as if she'd tried to fool him. 'No,' Dilys said, 'but you'd still water them.' He laughed, set the crate down, and asked for one of the tight buds she'd been leaving on the tray. She wrapped it in a square of greaseproof and he slipped it into his jacket like a prize from a fair.

By the time the ovens were roaring and the first loaves were going in, the window had turned the colour of the inside of a shell. Dilys laid the last petal on the top tier and stepped back. For one second, before someone flicked the kitchen lights on, the flower looked as though it had opened that morning and been left out in the air.
