Realistic portrait and flag scenes collage

Realism · Mixed · Photo

The collage shows four close-up photographs of tattoos on skin, with a United States penny placed beside the top panel for scale. The main panels show a realistic portrait of a man in a dark suit and red tie, a man in a suit on horseback-style riding of a raptor in front of a flag, and a raptor wearing a bridle beside a flag with stars. One panel shows a hand gripping a rifle above a flag, with small dark marks along the lower edge. The work uses fine shading and smooth blending, with red, blue and grey ink dominating the flag and clothing.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody on Gullan Skerry had seen a raptor until the Tuesday ferry brought Hollis Strand, who wore a dark suit to cross six miles of chop and carried a folded flag under one arm like a newspaper. He had come to buy the animal. Old Ma Teague, who kept it in the lee of the lighthouse, had no intention of selling, and she said so while holding out a tin bucket of mackerel at arm's length.

Strand did not understand the creature. He tried to bridle it with a length of harbour rope, talking loudly about contracts and a country that needed riding. The raptor regarded him with one yellow eye, then took the bucket, the rope and one of his cufflinks, which it swallowed whole. Ma Teague laughed until she had to sit down on the step.

By evening Strand had learned that the animal went where it pleased and carried only whoever it allowed. At dawn it lowered its long neck beside the flagpole outside the post office, and the flag that had snapped over the harbour for a century came down in the spray. Strand stood on the quay with his shoes soaked, holding a red tie the wind had torn loose from his collar.

On the next Tuesday the ferry went back without him. The flag went up again over the lighthouse, ragged at one corner where something had been chewing it, and the raptor sat below it on the rocks, watching the empty sea as if it expected someone to come round the point and ask again.
