Belle and the Beast on an upper arm
Upper arm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows Belle in a flowing yellow gown standing beside the Beast in a green jacket, with a castle rising behind them. A glass dome sits on a pedestal in front, covering a rose, and the figures are drawn with smooth, cartoon-like outlines and soft shading. Bold yellow, green and warm tones dominate, and the design wraps across the upper arm and onto the shoulder.

Brother Anselm had kept the rose under its bell of glass for eleven winters, and in all that time no one had asked him why. The abbey kept its books and its bees, its ledgers of tithes and its cold cellar of apples, and the rose sat apart on a stone pedestal in the cloister garth, the only thing the monks had ever refused to sell. When the frost came down, Anselm lifted the glass each night and wiped the condensation from its inside with a folded linen cloth, the way his mother had once wiped the steam from a kitchen window.

The girl from the village came the spring she turned fourteen. Her father mended the abbey's carts and she carried his dinner up the hill in a tin pail, and she was the first person in years to stop at the rose and read the Latin cut into the pedestal's base. Anselm, who had spent his youth being called a bear by novices, found himself answering her questions about frost and grafting while she turned the pages of the book she carried everywhere. She never asked him to take the glass away. She only asked whether it hurt the rose to be kept so safe.
He did not answer that for a long time. In the end he went down to the cellar, brought up the oldest cutting from the wall, and set it in a clay pot beside the bench. "Then you may keep the bell," he told her, "and I will keep the rose in the open, and we will see which of us is the better gardener."
By midsummer the cutting had put out three buds, and the glass stood empty in the cloister, its lid propped against the wall like a door left open.
