Great white sharks on a calf
Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo
A leg tattoo shows a great white shark breaching through a wave with its jaws wide open, set against a sunset sky. Below, a second shark with an open mouth swims among smaller sharks in layered blue water. The shading is smooth and the colours range from orange and yellow in the sky to deep blue and teal in the sea, with the design wrapping around the calf.

The shark had been following the Mary Ann Pascoe for three days when Tobias Penhale decided it was owed a name. Nobody else aboard would give it one. Dougie said it was bad luck to name what you hadn't caught, and the skipper said nothing at all, which in Newlyn was as good as a blessing or a curse depending on the tide.

Its dorsal sliced the grey swell off the Lizard each dawn, close enough that Tobias could count the notches on its fin with a mug of stewed tea in his hand. He called it Mrs Gorran after the widow who ran the chandlery, because it had the same way of looking at you as if you owed it money.
On the fourth evening the sun went down the colour of a bruised peach and the net came up empty again. Dougie swore at the water. Tobias leaned on the rail and watched the wave beside the hull lift and crest, and then Mrs Gorran came out of it, all white belly and jaws, the light behind her turning the spray to brass. For one breath the whole boat stopped moving.
Then the shark fell back into the sea without a sound, and the crew cheered like fools, and Tobias realised he had never once in three days seen it eat anything. He stood in the wet dark a long while, deciding that some things were only there to be looked at, the way the sunset was, and that he would tell his grandson about it and not one word would be believed.
