Realistic portrait of a grimacing figure in a headband
Realism · Other · Colour · Photo
A realistic colour portrait of a bald figure with a wide, grimacing mouth showing teeth and a squinting eye, wearing a striped red and white headband and a blue collar. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft highlights on the forehead and cheeks. Blue and yellow-green tones fill the background and the blue clothing, and the portrait fills the frame.

Dear Oswin,

You will not believe what came up the rocks on Tuesday with the fog still sitting on the Skerry. The supply boat had dropped him at the landing with a tin trunk and a letter from the Board, and he stood there in a red-and-white striped headband like a man who had boarded the wrong boat in a dream. Bald as a bollard, grinning like he had swallowed a wasp and rather enjoyed it. He told me his name was Mr Pettifer and that he was the new second keeper. I told him we had no second keeper. He said that was what the Board always said.
Thursday, the lamp failed at two in the morning. I went up the spiral with my tea going cold, and there he was, sitting cross-legged on the lens housing with his blue collar turned up against the wind, polishing the glass with his own sleeve and humming. The beam was already sweeping the water again. I asked him how. He pointed at the cracked brass ring and pulled that enormous squinting grimace, which I now understand is simply his face when he is pleased with himself.
I have decided to keep him on. The fishing boats have stopped complaining about the dark, and Mrs Haddow's cat has taken a shine to him, which is more than the cat ever managed for me. Do not come up at Christmas to argue about it. Bring the good matches and a spare headband if you can find one in a shade of red that doesn't clash.
Yours in salt and lamp oil, Edwin
