Smiling face ice lolly on a calf

Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo

A brown ice lolly with a smiling man's face shaded into its coating fills most of the frame, with melting drips running down to a stick at the bottom. The linework is bold and outlined, and the face and lolly surface use soft grey-brown shading with highlights. Warm brown and tan tones sit against the skin, and a partial tattoo is visible at the left edge of the frame.

The hoarding went up on the Monday, twelve feet tall, and by Wednesday every child on the front at Margate was pointing at Sid Hollis and shouting that he had been turned into a lolly. He had not been turned into anything. He had sat for one photograph in a cardigan, in a studio above a chip shop in Ramsgate, while a man with a clipboard said lovely, lovely, that's the one, and then the company printed him onto a giant choc-ice and sent him off to sell itself.

August was the trouble. The van's freezer gave up past noon most days, and the chocolate on the big lollies began to slide. By two o'clock the poster Sid on the hoarding was running down his own forehead in brown streaks, and the sticky-fingered boys from the amusements took it as a personal insult to the company and a great joke for themselves. Mrs Pargeter from the arcade told him he looked like a man who had been left in a car with the windows up.

On the last Saturday of the month a girl on a pink bicycle stopped the van and bought the final choc-ice in the box, the one with the crooked stick. She licked it once, studied the real Sid through the serving hatch, then the poster, then the real Sid again. 'You're not as brown,' she said. Sid agreed that he was not. He let her have it for nothing, and watched her wheel off down the prom with the drips running onto her wrist, and for the first time since the photograph he felt like a man who would be fine.
